Religious Education

At Whitchurch, the RE curriculum is designed to support children in exploring questions arising from the study of religion and belief and to promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Our aim is to be both informative and engaging. Children will encounter and respond to a range of religious texts and stories, artefacts, visitors and visits to places of worship. They will recognise that there are many different religions in our school and in the local area as we draw on the wealth of religious or spiritual experiences that our families can share. They will be encouraged to develop curiosity about each other and most of all recognise the common values, festivals and life events shared by the different religions.

We feel RE teaches our children:

  • to reflect on their own feelings, traditions, practices and beliefs
  • to think about what is important to them, valuing themselves and developing a sense of belonging
  • to communicate their ideas coherently and to respond respectfully to other people’s viewpoints
  • to develop their knowledge of local religions and worldviews
  • to ask meaningful questions and to engage in discussions about wider issues such as justice, truth, compassion and the meaning of life
  • to recognise diversity in religion, learning about similarities and differences both within and between religions and worldviews and the importance of dialogue between them.
  • to become well prepared for a world filled with a multitude of notions
  • to develop the knowledge and skills to flourish both within their own community and as members of a diverse and global society
